9 Past Presidents and a Prisoner

Apartment investors from around the world consistently select Texas and the Houston area as an ideal climate to operate and grow their multifamily portfolios. Texas apartment management companies work hard to maintain this ideal operating environment. The latest industry event was another great example.

Hard Work and Dedication

The bipartisan Houston Apartment Association Political Action Committee (HAA PAC) works closely with the Texas Apartment Association PAC (TAA PAC) and National Apartment Association PAC (NAA PAC) to ensure the voice of our local apartment industry is clearly heard at all levels of government. Members work tirelessly to meet with elected officials, raise funds and support candidates who favor a healthy business climate in Texas and back regulations that aide the multifamily industry and the residents and communities we serve.

Put a Little Fun in Fundraising

In Texas, we like doing things with a little more flare. Instead of another rubber chicken and bread-brick dinner in a bland banquet room, the HAA PAC hosted a lively wine tasting event for the NAA PAC on Thursday November 1st at the new Aris Market Square in downtown Houston.

Terri Clifton, an HAA PAC Steering Committee Member, and President of Better World Properties LLC, was pleased to see great support from area industry leaders. “HAA, TAA and NAA PAC efforts have a made a tremendous difference when it comes to regulations and business-building in the apartment industry. Legislation is an ongoing effort every year. It is imperative we raise funds and keep our voices heard in government to keep Houston and Texas at the forefront in the multifamily industry.”

9 Past Presidents and a Prisoner

Nine past apartment association presidents were asked to present their best wine selection. Event participants placed “voting” balls in the bowls in of their favorite presenter’s wine choice. Most fun was the opportunity to visit one-on-one with influential people in the apartment industry, including representatives from TAA and NAA. Funds raised help support national political action efforts.

The Wisdom of Presidents

Michael Knight, VP of Operations for Better World Properties LLC asked this poignant question to each of the nine past presidents, “What is your top tip for success in the apartment management industry?”

Inspiring replies from our past presidents that we have taken to heart:

Dick LaMarche – 1989 HAA President

Always take care of your vendors.

Eileen Subinsky – 1998 HAA President

            Hire the right people.

Vic Vacek – 1999 HAA President

            Have consistency with your staff.

Darlene Guidry – 2004 HAA President

            Treat your employees well.

Gary Blumberg – 2000 TAA President

Say to your customers, “I will take care of you.”

Diane Gilbert for David Hargrove – 2002 HAA President

            Hire right.

Suan Tinsley – 2007 HAA President

            Buy apartments!

Jackie Rhone – 2015 HAA President & 2017 TAA President

            It’s about the people.

Kyle Brown – 2017 HAA President

            Be a good operator.

The Prisoner

The winning wine was presented by Jackie Rhone of Greystar. Her wine selection was The Prisoner, a 2017 Napa Valley Red Blend. The Prisoner was inspired by the “mixed black” vintages first made by the Italian immigrants who originally settled in Napa Valley. The mixed planting vineyards have become a national treasure producing interesting varietal blends.

The Prisoner 2017 Napa Valley red blend features enticing aromas of dark chocolate, Bing cherry, roasted fig and clove. Ripe raspberry, pomegranate, boysenberry and vanilla artfully combine and linger harmoniously for a smooth luscious finish.1

The evening was filled with great stories and laughter among industry friends old and new. The funds raised will to continue making it a better world in the Texas Apartment industry.
